What is an Exercise Physiologist?

Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP) specialise in prescribing and delivering clinical exercise interventions for a broad range of pathological populations. These persons may be at risk of developing, or have existing, medical conditions and injuries.

The aims of AEP interventions are to prevent or manage acute, sub-acute or chronic disease and injury, with the primary goal of restoring optimal physical function, health or wellness. AEPs can also provide services to general or healthy populations who would like health and fitness or sports performance programs that utilise the latest scientific evidence and accommodate for their individual needs.

How can our Exercise Physiologist help you?

AEP’s are passionate towards getting you back to doing what you love following the onset of disease or injury. They are qualified to work with a multitude of different populations, from patients who are chronically ill to athletes, meaning they can assist you in achieving a broad range of health, movement, work or performance related goals. AEPs are experts at setting goals to build treatment plans and maintaining motivation.

Types of patients they treat

  • Private patients
  • WorkCover/Third Party Insurance – AEPs are able to offer return to work rehabilitation programs and functional evaluations that may be eligible for funding through WorkCover or Third Party Insurance.
  • Medicare – Medicare rebates are available for eligible patients who have been allocated exercise physiology services within a GP Management Plan or Team Care Arrangement from their doctor (ask one of our friendly staff or your GP for more information).
  • DVA – The Department of Veterans Affairs will cover the cost of exercise physiology treatment for eligible patients.
Things an AEP will NEVER do
  • Judge you or make you uncomfortable about your health levels or goals
  • Never leave any question unanswered
  • Take the motto “no pain, no gain”
  • Will never take a “one size fits all” approach
  • Will never dictate, they will always work with you to achieve your goals
How AEPs are different to other exercise professionals
  • University qualified
  • Subject to strict accreditation requirements with Exercise and Sports Science Australia
  • Required to complete mandatory continuing professional development to ensure delivery of current evidence based clinical practice
  • Eligible to register with Medicare, DVA, WorkCover and most private health insurers
What to expect in your Initial Assessment

During your first appointment with an AEP, they will take you through a comprehensive assessment in order to develop a treatment plan based on your unique requirements. This session will involve a questionnaire about your health and medical history, so it would be useful to bring along any relevant scans or blood test results that you may have.

What to wear: loose, comfortable clothing, as you may be asked to do a range of movements, you may not actually be doing any actual ‘exercising’.

After this appointment, your AEP will provide you with a plan of action which may vary depending on your pathology, goals and assessment results.

Subsequent appointments may include working in our exercise room or across at the fully equipped gym.
