Formula 1, G-Forces and Neck Strength

Formula 1, G-Forces and Neck Strength

By Julian Gurizzan - Physiotherapist

One of our physiotherapists, Chloe, will be trackside at the Austrian Grand Prix this weekend for the Formula 1! It’s an incredible opportunity to see the Austrian Emergency Medicine Service in action and elite sport at its absolute peak—and to bring those insights back into the clinic.

Formula 1 drivers deal with some of the highest physical demands in sport. During racing, they’re regularly exposed to 4–6G forces under braking and cornering, meaning their body can feel up to six times heavier every lap.

A big part of that load is taken through the neck. The helmet alone weighs around 1.5kg, but under G-force it can feel like 7–8kg or more, repeatedly loaded and controlled for the entire race distance.

That’s why neck strength, upper back endurance, and trunk control are such a big focus in their training. It’s not just about being strong—it’s about being able to stay stable and precise while under constant high load and fatigue.

From a physiotherapy perspective, it’s a great reminder of what we’re trying to build in rehab and performance: capacity. Whether it’s elite athletes or weekend sport, the principle is the same—stronger, better-conditioned tissues tolerate load more efficiently and are more resilient to injury.

We also know holistic care is essential for Formula 1 drivers and pit crew, addressing physical performance, injury prevention, recovery, and overall wellbeing through a comprehensive, person-centred approach.

We use those same ideas every day in clinic, just scaled to the individual.

We look forward to seeing what Chloe brings back from the paddock after the weekend in Austria!

Chloe has experience working in motorsport including V8 Supercars where she supports drivers and pit crew on and between race weekends.
